hmm, I like the question about the so called 'high authority of natural wine' and the answer, explaining exactly why there is some high jealousy in 'conventional market'
I did not think every wine on the natural wine fair was natural (not to my definition), but I did not care.
I did not think every wine was good, but
'Why should every natural wine be perfect?'
as if all conventionals are ;-)))
I see the natural wine movement more as:
- back to the roots, to terroir
- back to more different tastes
- back to letting nature decide more, human helping nature in stead of forcing it into a direction.

in fact: 'les vins naturels, faut y boire pour y croire'

maybe the 'high authority' can be explained by the high enthusiasm of the winemakers, the winesellers (importers, cavists, ...), the sommeliers of very good restaurants AND the 'addicted' consumers...


Thanks for this comment. I'm in total agreement. And correct. Not all the wines at the Fair was natural as we think of it. Sometimes one or two slip in. Oh well. While not all wines were wonderful, if you go to a conventional wine show (VE, VinIT, etc) and a Natural one, do a side by side in 8 hours, how many fabulous wines you had at each one, I'd guarantee most people would have tasted a higher percentage of exciting wines at the Natural. But of course, not all of the wines were great, to my taste. But c'est la vie.

...and of course thank you Jancis, always honest and fresh. And, she brings up a good point about conventional wine makers. Perhaps they feel a bit threatened because since natural wines get so much attention these days, this means that even the bad ones get attention.
People often misunderstand (me) and think that we (I) suggest that since it's natural, it's good. BS. A good wine is a good wine .
So, with all the attention that "natural wine" gets, the bad gets it too. The real topic here is that we should (or we prefer) our beverages to be as close to the raw material as can be. Sometimes this can be a revelation..
Just like the organic food movement was decades ago. At first, just because it was organic, meant it was good. We soon learned that some farmers stood out. We became selective..

I am rambling on a bit, but I hope my point was made!

@Wijnfolie, I absolutely agree with you there - it's certainly what I believe, and hopefully that philosophy is reflected in my wines! "The proof is in the bottle (or glass)" and the rest is all words, no? :)
